Database applications to lead the cloud charge for hosting services, says report

A detailed plan of which applications businesses hope to host in the cloud will help them stay on-target during the process of migration. According to a recently published report commissioned by Microsoft and mentioned in Forbes, spending on database applications will be the chief area for cloud hosting growth over the next few years, with 57 percent of 1,619 IT-based respondents looking to host specifically this type of program in cloud environments.

Among other questions, survey subjects were asked which hosted applications will make up "a significant portion" of spending by 2017. At second place, only 3 percentage points lower, were email applications. Only 4 percent said they weren't planning to invest in any hosted applications at all.

The report also breaks up the responses by geographic region, with South America surpassing all others for predicted application hosting in several categories. This is especially true for email and database apps, but also applies to other possible uses, including media streaming, collaborative applications and virtual desktop hosting.

Another section of the report concerns the migration plans for organizations looking to transfer off of the 2003 Windows Server. While many different responses were given, a full quarter of subjects said that they intend to use on-premises hardware to implement a newer version of Windows Server, and 18 percent said they are planning to use a hosting provider for the same purpose.

When implementing a modernization project for legacy applications, businesses need tools that are adaptable with their host and client applications, as well as the data that needs to be integrated.
