Although there are solutions to help enterprises to be ready for cloud computing, migrating still requires some planning, especially since there are likely to now be more screen-based devices in your company that need to be accounted for. A recent post in Wired outlined some of the steps companies should consider before upgrading their systems, and one pertains to operation readiness.
With a custom portal integration plan that reflects your organization's specific capabilities, you can proceed at your own pace and simplify the process. That's what the author of the piece, IBM's James Kobielus, alludes to by addressing the necessity of tailoring the cloud entry based on which applications are used.
He also says that companies should have information ahead of time to make sure they are making the right decision in their cloud plans.
"It's crucial to do a comprehensive technical assessment of existing and planned big data and analytics applications and workloads to determine which kind of cloud they should be rolled out onto," he writes. He adds that "the best big data and cloud-computing platforms should integrate well with a company's existing legacy investments or plans to develop new analytics development and modeling tools."
It helps that major software companies seem to be focusing on further cloud development. Microsoft, for example, has been developing its Azure cloud platform and added new services to it, including the Azure Data Factory, which businesses should assess in terms of potential ROI.
Make a smart modernization decision by being mindful of the legacy applications in your enterprise. Moving to the cloud is an increasingly attractive option but should not be done at the expense of the valuable software you've been using.
