In general, it seems to provide the best level of service
if the setting is automatic start.
Power failures, system reboots and so on will contribute to
a "down" system...then you have to restart it manually or
using a remote control connection to the server.
The only con for auto-start is if you do not use the
particular Screensurfer service on a regular basis, it will
sit and use up some memory...
When you are running Screensurfer as a personal,
developer's copy, it is then a personal preference...I
generally have it set as manual on my machine, since I then
can start/stop from the Screensurfer Service applet and
easily select diagnostic mode whenever I want to quickly
set all logging on.
