I am working from a different machine where screensurfer is installed. When I do a compile, screensurfer crashes...any clues? this has occurred more and more the last couple of days.

Do you have any Dr. Watson logs you can e-mail to surfer@ieinc.com? This can help identify what is happening in your situation.
One work-around in the meantime, is to try and stop all sessions (from the console) before a compile. I know this is not a good long-term solution, but while we are trying to fix this it could avoid trips between buildings...
