i realize that this could potentially be a performance problem, so if that's the case we'll have to forget it. However, since the order of compile cannot be depended upon without specifying by filename (not a particularly enticing option), when screen recognition fails, it can be a tedious task to walk the recognition tree and hope you can see where it "bailed out". If there was some sort of trace available to show the branches taken, it would be of tremendous assistance for this type of problem.

Well, trace is its own runtime environment, so performance isn't a problem-- the screen recognition code is tight and small, so we can easily create a parallel version that talks while it chews gum, so to speak :)
